The fire season is underway both here and there. In Portugal, researchers have studied what has happened to the flammable eucalyptus trees since the catastrophic fires in 2017.
Professor Joaquim Sande e Silva, an expert on eucalyptus and fire ecology, has been able to see how so many new shoots have spread in some places that it has become like a "jungle" of eucalyptus.
In poorly managed forests, sometimes completely abandoned by their owners, the trees are now waiting for the next heat wave.
